FS 071223 - The art of packing heavy

One general guideline when packing light is to pack one hat, two pairs of shoes, three bottoms, four tops (short or long-sleeve or outer layer), five pairs of socks, and six pairs of underwear. It should last you for two weeks. Well, let me smile right here. Such achievement is only possible by doing laundry and is unrealistic if you plan on exercising or doing any activities in warm or humid places.

Contrary to the dominant trend, I don't fit all my belongings into a standard 22 x 14 x 9 carry-on. I am perfectly ok with it. I am the culprit with the neon orange tag "heavy" stuck on its luggage. Plus, my husband and I travel most of the time with surfboards (plural) up to 4, which means we carry surfboard coffin bags - the name speaks for itself; it is supersize, the type of bags you pick up at the oversize counter with all the strollers, golf bags, and other sports equipment. I do, however, proudly use a carry-on, but it is full of shoes. I have learned not to mix my shoes with my clothes and have them travel separately. Your shoes, too, deserve a vacation; why would you deprive them of warm weather and a fresh pedicure?

The best advice I read is to layer most of your clothing on the plane - why would I do that? Why would I layer to save space and ruin my clothing in a filthy plane? No, thank you. I will pass on this one too.

My only recommendation is to select your luggage well. I always did soft shell luggage because they have more give. My favorites are from Patagonia, and one significant benefit is that if it breaks, Patagonia replaces it for free - a lifetime warranty of sorts.

I packed heavy; I am in Oahu - 13 pairs of shoes, 15 swimsuits, and more. I will make a point to wear everything.

I am in white this week. Last time, I was in a store, and around me, three women, probably in their 50s, all wearing a skinny pair of white denim with a light blue top. It looked perfectly fine and good on them but screamed dull Frank and Eileen look, nothing against the brand. White doesn't need to be systematically a pair of skinny denim with a pastel blouse you wear as soon as temperatures rise above 75F.

The dress is from Bassike. I wear this Australian brand a lot. The cuts are good, and it has personality. It was from the 2022 resort collection, and I knew the athletic top would be perfect for me. This dress follows me on all my travels to warm destinations. It is a day and night dress. She will have a good life span.

The second look is from Tibi, yes, Tibi again. The a-line white denim skirt screams "summer 2023 trend", and I felt for it. Initially, I didn't want to buy a pricey option, so I picked a COS skirt, but I washed it with blue, and you guessed it, she is no longer white. The look is uninspired because I did what Tibi did with the same top I got on sale. The shoes are from The Row.

The clutch is from Gucci. It was a have-to-have moment. I love Hawaii and knew it was meant to be when I saw it. I won't wear it daily, but it has a special place in my closet and follows me on all my summer travels. It is an emotional buy that I will keep for a long time.

Aloha from Fannie
