FS 110523 Greetings from Marfa - "What Texas once was, Marfa still is."
MARFA, I love you, even though the only reviews you get online are from people who don't understand your charm. People love to hate Marfa; they say it's too slow and quiet. Lesley Villareal's 2024 calendar is a take on all the bad reviews Marfa receives, and this one broke my heart: "Marfa, nice for one night, but nothing to write about home." Let me write about you, Marfa.
Marfa is a hamlet with less than 1,800 souls. Marfa was founded in the early 1880s as a railroad water stop and probably got its name after Dostoyevski novels. Marfa is a study in contrasts, where rugged desert landscapes meet minimalist art installations and cowboy hats mingle with designer boots. The town's main drag, South Highland Avenue, is a short stretch of quirky shops, art galleries, and restaurants, all set against the backdrop of the vast Chihuahuan Desert. Welcome to the wild wild west - a 3-hour drive from El Paso, where tumbleweeds and cotton balls wander the road.
In Marfa, people wave hello from their car, time slows down, and your blood pressure drops instantly. You could summarize Marfa to the Marfa lights, the movie Giant, and the art installations of Donald Judd. What you've probably seen from Marfa is the Prada Marfa store, a permanent installation by artists Elmgreen & Dragset. Marfa is quirky, but there is a lot more.
So, what to wear in Marfa when temperatures can go from freezing to boiling and the main activity is to visit galleries indoors/outdoors? It is ok to channel your inner cowboy. In Marfa, mustaches and hats are real and meant to be. No one is in a Movember contest. Marfa is modern Americana meets Beyonce on her laundry day - figure that out.
Look 1 is a mixed inspiration from the great Sherri McCullen. I wanted this, and this looks without investing in any of them. COS made my wish come true, and here you go, COS head-to-toe. The skirt has a good texture, and I love the halter neck cashmere. The shoes, cowboy boots, of course, from Tecovas - probably the best alternatives out there. If you want authentic cowboy boots, Lucchese, Tony Lama, or La Hacienda Boots Co. are beautiful options.
The jacket is a find from Marfa. It is from Ginew - a native american brand, and it is made of 10.10 oz—Army Duck wax canvas. I am obsessed with this jacket. I will share it with my husband, and it has curbed my desire for Miu Miu and Prada jackets - Ginew for the win.
Other Marfa finds are the belts from Skora Marfa, founded by Bogusia Golecka; all her leather products are hand-crafted in small batches. I have been wanting a belt, but I am not into accessories. I know magazines show us how to style our clothes all day long by adding a hat, three belts, gloves, and a few ornaments on the top. The holidays are approaching, which could work, but it is not my jam. I will attempt a belt for once.
For looks 2 and 3, I wore the belts with the Sid jeans from Tibi - it has its cowboy vibe but is not too obvious. The evening look is subtle "Westerny" with the Western jacket from Tibi, boots from Gucci, and a beautiful top from Aisling Camps. It is chill and fits everybody. The belt here works.
The day look is more gallery attire with a top from Proenza Schouler, which will work perfectly in Los Angeles when I want to fake winter weather in short-sleeved knit. The shoes are from Aeyde. I was in the mood for a snake print but without shedding the snake skin price, plus Aeyde does 42, a no-brainer.
Bye Y'all
With love from Fannie
